Retreat...and Feet

I am at the Quilter's Haven Retreat at the St. James Hotel in Redwing, Minnesota. I can only say -- this is AWESOME! There will be more people arriving today and there will be about 30 in total sewing and quilting away. It is GREAT!! This was a great choice - since it fits in nice with my "try new things" approach I have decided to embrace at least for the moment. The ideas are freely flowing and the sharing of ideas and projects is amazing.

So -- I think I will have to add a second teflon foot to my arsenal of presser feet. Earlier this week I told you about the 52 foot that I tried (and that I have now learned I may have to beg Jean to exchange for me since I grabbed a 52 foot and I have now learned there is a 52D foot that will fit my Bernina 830 -- and that is my next challenge to learn and start using -- I know, I know -- how can you own a Bernina 830 and not be using it all the time....that is about to change). Anyhow, I love it when people tell me they read this blog and want to share their experiences and idea!!!!! (by the way, you can feel free to share with me and the others - I have enabled the comments section - it is a great way to share information). Jo - who works in the shop - came up to me and said she had read about my teflon foot admiration for foot 52 and told me she wanted to share her favorite teflon foot -- FOOT 53. That foot is also a teflon foot but is narrower -- here is what I hadn't thought of -- she said that her favorite thing about the 53 foot is that the right side of the presser foot is 1/8 of an inch --- that is PERFECT for topstitching on laminate fabric! The nice thing about Bernina is that they sell extra storage cases for presser feet in the event that you fill up your 1 or 2 or 3....so in other words - you can never have too many presser feet. Or, you can be creative like Ginger (a Quilter's Haven regular) that has built a presser foot garage -- leaving open doors to keep adding feet.

Well, I have to go -- another day is starting. This is "sew" exciting!!!

Off to Retreat

Okay...another new thing...I hate to admit this but in all the years that I have been quilting -- I have never been to a quilt shop retreat. I am about to cross that item off my quilter's bucket list also -- I am heading to Jean's retreat this weekend at the St. James. With this pesky pneumonia of mine always lurking nearby, with two kids and schedules all their own to organize -- the stars are lining up and I am GOING! Jean has been busy preparing to make it a wonderful weekend for all and those of us that are going have projects all packed....it should be a fun weekend. I will let you know...

Here is the destination of the day...the St. James Hotel in Redwing, Minnesota. For 30 of us quilters attending it will be home away from home until Sunday....

In a rut....

Okay - I admit it. I have been stuck in a rut. A quilting rut. I think it has something to do with adding two kids to my life -- suddenly when I have a few precious minutes to quilt I tend to want to do something I am familiar with and that is easy. The process of learning something new seems formidable at times. However, with each new year come's resolutions - mine this year was "Simplify" -- try to find things to make my life simpler. It started out with tossing a lot of things, organizing and cleaning -- and catching up on past due things (like quilt projects and UFO's....). A little bit of time can yield amazing results. So - this week I decided to get out of my quilting rut and try some new things.

The new things today included laminated fabric and a teflon foot. I have always admired the beautiful laminates that Jean has in her shop -- but honestly, I was too scared to try and make something out of them -- how would I sew it, how do you hold it together, can you iron it -- all kinds of questions. Well, today -- I just tried it. I love this new book that Jean has in her shop "Sew Serendipity Bags" that is a collection of totes and bags by designer Kay Whitt. I love it so much so that I will be teaching a class called "Sew Sew Bags" starting February 28th and for at least 6 months the class will journey through the book. I selected a "simple" bag pattern called the Foldable Shopper - but decided to not make it foldable. Because my laminate fabric wasn't quite wide enough I shortened the pattern my 1 inch all around for the large size bag. I decided to try laminate lining and also a laminate pocket. I selected a contrast fabric for the handle and the pocket trim out of a cotton fabric.

Laminate fabric is not bad to sew on. That was my joyous discovery. In fact, at one point I was using my regular foot and contemplating whether or not the Bernina Foot 52 (a teflon foot) was worth $61.90 --- I tell you IT IS WORTH EVERY CENT!! Once I got to sewing the trim and the bag - I put that foot on and I was no longer skating on laminate ice. That foot was AWESOME!!! I used scotch tape instead of pins and discovered use as little as possible and remove it as soon as you can. The fabric has no give whatsoever so be exact in your details and cutting. I didn't use any interfacing or batting in the bag and it stands up nicely just as it is. I followed the pattern (mostly) except I decided not to make it foldable so I left off the tab and the button and I cut 3" squares for the bottom so it was a bit wider but narrower. I ironed the trim on the pocket and just used a pressing cloth and cooled my iron a bit. All in all - worked like a charm. I tried something new and just loved the experience. And, I really love the bag!!

The minkee has arrived. The new animal prints, black paisley and all the favorites!

I am on my way to the shop!! These make the greatest backings for quilts. And, with just 1/2 a yard (more or less depending on the width you want) you can make the coolest scarves! I will upload photos of mine...having said that -- I now need to go and get mine so that I can add to my collection. Jodi, Rachel and Jean will be right there with me adding to their collections of scarves (and probably helping me make mine.). That is what is so great about having quilter friends. It all started with Jodi making a scarf that I had in my hands as a gift at a holiday party -- only Jean managed to take it away in a game we were playing (her idea....hmmm...lol...) -- and Rachel coming in to save the day by saying let's make you one right now -- so Rachel helped (really she made) me a beautiful scarf...I just love it. Chelsea from the shop made one that night also and Jodi added another to her collection. So, at the end of the night -- we all had new, beautiful scarves!!! THE MINKEE has ARRIVED -- I am so excited...and since it is cold outside...PERFECT TIMING!!!

I think it is also worthy to recognize the efforts that Jean and many of the quilter's have taken in terms of national service. Quilts of Valor is a program that Jean participates in and has worked tirelessly to put handmade quilts in the hands of veterans and soldiers touched by war. Okay - I owe all of you an apology with an explanation. I love going to Quilter's Haven, seeing what is new, visiting with all of the wonderful staff members, and getting inspired and learning from Jean -- and then coming online and sharing some of that with all of you. However, my lungs seem to be getting in the way of my love of quilting lately -- I had pneumonia in September, only to recover and mange to get double pneumonia in October and land in the hospital for 7 days....needless to say this has cut into my quilting fun....

I haven't had an opportunity to get over to the shop to photograph the block of the month blocks, see what is new -- or even hear all about market from Jean. But, I promise you --- SOON....and I will SHARE...

In the meantime, let's talk about Winter. Well the cool air is not something my lungs love right now -- rumor is that there were snow flurries in the air last night....so that means....

WINTER BLUES....

This photo does not do this quilt justice. The quilt is in the shop and it is BEAUTIFUL!!! This is a Stitch Connection Embroidery CD that has all kinds of fun snowmen and snowflake blocks on the disk -- all ready for you to put in your machine and embroider a beautiful winter quilt. The CD also includes instructions for putting the quilt together and incorporating the designed.

EVEN BETTER: Jean and her wonderful staff have "kitted" this quilt so the fabrics are all ready for you to begin the embroidery and finish the quilt. Jean has the embroidery CD's in stock and ready to go home with you.

Sounds like a good winter project....I know that I must be recovering...because my thoughts are turning from how sick I feel to how much I miss Jean, her wonderful staff, all of you....and quilting!!!

October...Time to start thinking - Halloween

Halloween is just around the corner....we spent the weekend hanging pumpkins, ghosts and skeletons all around the yard and the house (all motivated by a five year old boy very excited for Halloween). So, well costume decisions have already gone from a lion to Scooby Doo to a pumpkin....one thing has remained certain - I LOVE this Halloween quilt that was made and is on display at Quilter's Haven, The quilt measures 50" by 60" and is the perfect size for a holiday throw or quilt to hang on the wall. The pattern is "Fab Five" by Abbey Lane. The kit that includes all fabrics for the top and the binding are available for $41.04 (pattern extra). Hmmm....time to head to Quilter's Haven....starting on October 3rd means there is a chance it will be done by the 31st. Check out the sample - it is really cute!

NEW - Thread Boxes

I love being in the shop when something new arrives that is fun and exciting. Today as I was in the shop a box was unpacked that contained new thread holders -- ones with trays, tight closures and a handle! Most of us seem to have as much thread as we do fabric - but keeping it organized and fresh can sometimes be a challenge. These new boxes will house both the Isacord and the Aurofil threads -- we did a test run of both kinds to check! The thread boxes contain two trays that can be removed to sit my your sewing machine or you can store those in a drawer. The boxes are sturdy and made by Artbin. The 2011-2012 Quilter's Haven Block of the Month kicks off this week - June 2012! Once again, Jean Graham is going to design a lovely sampler quilt that will unveil as the year progresses. April Showers bring...A Rain Poncho!

The raindrops were falling lightly when I walked into Quilter's Haven the other day. April showers. As though it was meant to be - the first thing I saw when I walked in the shop -- a pattern by Indygo Junction for a "Partly Cloudy Poncho." The second thing that I saw was a delightful array of wonderful fabrics that Quilter's Haven has PERFECT for a rain poncho. Suddenly April showers might be lots and lots of fun....

Our Thoughts and Prayers...

This week owner Jean Graham lost her mother, Agnes Bergee. Jean's mother, like Jean, was a kind, caring, compassionate and very special person. Jean and her mother both shared a love for fabric, textiles, and quilting. Jean and her mother were very close and this loss will be hard on Jean and her family. The family service is this evening and the funeral is tomorrow. Jean has always taken time to care for us - her customers and her quilting family - now it is time to show her that we care! So - here's sending her our thoughts and prayers!

Bergee, Agnes Rose age 89, of Edina. Born July 10, 1921, died April 1, 2011. Preceded in death by husband, Almont; sister and brother- in-law, Mary and Edwin Zschetzsche; brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Hildie Callanan. Survived by children, Jean Graham, Marie Ann (Danny) Andersen, Ron (Renee) Bergee, Mark (Barb) Bergee, Brian Bergee and Ruth (Michael) Jimenez; grandchildren, Shawn, Aaron, Melanie, Matthew, Rachel, Andrew, Ben, Mara, Mark, Luke, Ted, Aidan and Shewaye; great-granddaughter, Eve. Also survived by brother, Ben (Ethyl) Callanan; sisters, Alice (Sherman) Miller and Rita (Jerome) Windschitl; many nieces, nephews and friends who loved her dearly. Agnes was born in Springfield, MN to Edward and Rose Callanan. She is a graduate of the College of St. Catherine. She received her Master's degree from Mankato State University. During her professional career Agnes worked as a home extension agent for the University of Minnesota, a home economics teacher and director of the Mother Infant Care Education program at North High School. Agnes loved teaching, sewing, gardening, music and nature. She was deeply devoted to her family and church and was an active member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church for 44 years. Agnes will be deeply missed. Visitation 5-8 PM Tuesday, April 5, Washburn-McReavy Edina Chapel, W. 50th St. & Vernon Ave. at Hwy 100. Mass of Christian Burial 12:30 PM Wednesday, April 6, with visitation beginning 11:30 AM at the Church of Our Lady of Grace, 5051 Eden Ave S., Edina. Interment St. Mary's Cemetery, Sleepy Eye, MN. With dolls all around us in stores everywhere, the American Girl store a "hop skip and a purchase" away -- well....maybe its time to start looking at creating something other than doll quilts. Look at this adorable PJ set Jean recently made for her grandaughter!! Jean's grandaughter has made Jean a regular at the American Doll store -- and Jean has responded back by finding a whole variety of patterns and ideas for dolls - -stop in and explore some of the options!

Too Cute to Cut

This super easy and fun quilt is from the "Quilts and More" Winter 2010 edition - one of those delightfully simply patterns to use when the fabric you have is just "Too Cute to Cut"!!!

This quilt was very simple to do and I just quilted it with an overall stipple. It took me longer to sew the binding down than it did to make the quilt. Jean has a few kits left in the shop if you are interested in this cute fabric - it makes one think of spring (even though winter is everywhere....)

Yes, the "Box-It" Bag Bottom Ruler ($19.00). This handy little ruler allows you to measure the sides of your bags for perfectly even sides/gussets. There is a slot you can insert your fabric in and then a grid to measure the side of your bag, mark it and sew it - then do it on the other side. She said you would love it!

Last week I was in the shop and looking over the notion's wall at Quilter's Haven. I saw this funny looking little thing for lack of a better word in a package and immediately said to Jean "what is this?" She said it is one little awesome tool -- it is a little scissors that lets you cut jump stitches for embroidery - or at least that is what it is intended to do. The cost is $18.95.

I decided to give it a try - I love new things.

Okay - this is the coolest little thing. I took it out of the package and was just amazed at it. First of all, this little puppy is sharp - and pointy. Keep the cover on the tip or you will have a sweet little puncture in your bag or project or pocket or wherever you put it. I tried it out on some machine embroidery - and it is slick. Okay - but here is where I am really using it. I am working on binding a quilt - and it is just great as a little thread snip. I am starting an embroidery project and it will be perfect.

If you think you have everything there is related to quilting but you don't have one of these -- you need one. I give it a thumb and forefinger up (which is really how you use it....).

Friday I was in the shop and found myself looking through the magazines Jean has by the cutting table at the shop. The Winter 2010 "Quilts and more" caught my eye (and, as we know - winter truly has arrived). For only $6.99 this magazine is packed with 23 easy projects -- not only are they quick and easy projects - they are really cute projects. I like a magazine in which there are at least several projects that I find myself thinking "I want to make that."

Not only did I think "I want to make that" - I decided that I will not only tell you about this magazine - but I intend to make some of the projects and show you. So, here is what you will be seeing in the next few weeks. First, there is a quick and easy row quilt (selected the fabric on Friday from the shop) -- and, better yet - I came home Friday and in a very short time had the topped pieced. I am quilting it right now and will show it to you as soon as it is done (I am pretty sure it will take me longer to bind than to make the top unless I get my friend Zee to bind it - she is the fastest and best binder I know...).

There is an adorable little Christmas tree centerpiece you make out of terra cotta pots that I am going to make and show you as soon as I find the little pots. My intent is to let my 4 year old son make one along with me (it will be sticky but fun....) and I will let you know how it goes. I love the little owl purse shown on the cover. There are several nice sized lap throws in the magazine. Oh - and some adorable donut pincushions (and I know the perfect "baker" to make and show you those - I just have to convince her to make some for us...).

I think you will love some of the projects you are going to see out of this magazine in the next few weeks. Stop by the shop and pick up your copy of this magazine today -- for, when they are gone - they are gone....

The Quilter's Haven Blog is back!! Sorry for sort of "leaving you" for several months - as you have noticed, we have a lot of new things -- not only new ideas and products for you -- but a new STORE LOCATION, a new WEBSITE -- and lots of NEW things to share with you and tell you about.

I spent all day yesterday with Jean at the shop and was just amazed at all the new products that she has in stock. I have much to tell you in the upcoming blogs! I also invite you to feel free to leave comments and make suggestions about blog post - please do not leave order requests or information - those need to be directed directly to Jean at her email or at the store. However, Jean and I discussed what we are going to do with this blog and we have decided that we are going to try out new ideas and products, show you projects in process and let me test out new ideas and techniques (showing you them along the way and giving you my honest opinion - in other words, if we give something a "thumbs down" you likely won't find it in Jean's store!!!).

I was REALLY impressed with a new little machine that just arrived in the shop -- the Bernette 46. It is a new starter machine from Bernina and, well Bernina doesn't allow prices to be posted online, I can tell you that in their own literature they say "starting at $149.00" and I can tell you that Jean is at the starting gate. You are likely to see a few more entries about this machine - I told Jean I want to try this out and see if it is really all that they describe. We are going to also explore the new Bernina 300 series (which I am also really impressed with -- I have to tell you I have a Bernina 830 -- but for some reason I really want a Bernina 380 also)!!! And, I have a new Bernina serger you are going to get to help me take out of the box and try out!

Anyhow, back to this Bernette 46 -- a few years ago my Grandma gave me her sewing machine when she was moved into assisted living. She wanted a small, lightweight machine and got one from a retailer. She never liked and never used that machine much. I tend to have a "collection" of machines and when she died I got that machine - I have to tell you that one went on ebay. If Jean had been a Bernina dealer at the time and the Bernette 46 had been around - that is the one I can assure you my Grandma would have had -- and she would have loved it and used it! My 4 year old son, Christoper, wants "Jean to teach him to quilt" and I think this might be the machine he learns on!! In fact, he was begging Jean to begin his lessons yesterday -- and the Bernette 46 was the very machine he picked out and wanted her to "light up" and plug in. If he was a few years older - he might have one of these under the tree for Christmas!

So - if you want a light weight but heavy duty machine to take to classes or to tote around instead of a featherweight -- look at this machine. Or - check you holiday gift list --- yourself, mother, grandmother, daughter, son, husband, boyfriend, sister, brother, friend -- well, this is a GREAT gift and one that would bring years of enjoyment.

I was sure impressed! So impressed that in case you missed the photo above - here it is again!

Bed Turning Event at Quilter's Haven Featuring Evelyn Nall - March 27, 2010 (10:30am -12:30pm)

Evelyn Nall was first taught to embroider by her mother at a very young age. She made her first dress out of feedsacks when she was about 10 years old but didn’t really start sewing until her children were born – 2 girls and 2 boys. She made play outfits, dresses, pants, suits, prom dresses and eventually a wedding dress for one of her daughters – all the while making clothes for herself and making curtains and draperies for her home. She was a very busy lady! Quilting came later, in 1970-71 with her first completed quilt – a Dutch Doll pattern – for her oldest grandchild, Erin, born in 1971. From there it’s been a wonderful journey as Evelyn has completed wellover 60 quilts – she loses count! Evelyn was born in Tulsa Oklahoma and moved to Minnesota in 2006 to be close to her daughter and her family. She has won numerous ribbons for her quilts over the years and she even entered a quilt in the 2008 Minnesota Quilt Show. Her favorites are the old patterns and the reproduction fabrics but she has done a bit of everything. Her children and their families love how generous she has been in making and gifting quilts to them. Even with having given many quilts away, she still has many she treasures and loves to show, telling a little something about each one that reveals so much about this lovely woman.

Quilter's Haven has 2 new Sue Spargo books in stock as well as a delightful selection of wool.

Sue Spargo's "Urban Sacs" book features an array of tote bags embellished with wool designs (having heard Jean Graham mention several times her love for the tote bag with the wool elephant on it I have a feeling you will soon be seeing a sample of that in the shop).

The second Sue Spargo book is entitled "Magnolia" and has a wonderful assortment of wool applique for individual pieces or you can combine the designs into a beautiful wall hanging.

A few years ago, Jean taught a class based on a Sue Spargo tote/wool applique pattern -- it was the first tote bag that I had ever made (so it was Jean that made me into a tote bag monster) and the first time I had ever done wool applique. Perhaps we will again be so lucky and Jean will teach a class based on one or both of these books -- if you get a chance to learn either tote bag construction or wool applique from her -- go for it! That is the BEST advise I can give you -- anything you can learn from Jean - learn. She is truly a quilting Master.

I LOVE THIS PRODUCT!!! Quilter's Haven just got in Bo-Nash Iron Clean which says on the package it is "The easy way to clean your iron's surface." So, I tried it. It truly is.

The package contains 10 sheets and sells at Quilter's Haven for $3.95. I had an iron that had come in contact with the wrong side of some fusible web (and had some normal build up on it as well - OK a lot of build up) -- it was in serious need of cleaning - so I opened the package and took out what looked like a dryer sheet. The package says to heat the iron on high for one minute, put the sheet of iron clean on a paper towel (I used a scrap of muslin) and wipe the base of your iron over the IRON CLEAN sheet until the residue was removed. I was skeptical at first - then totally amazed. It worked and it worked wonderfully -the bottom of my iron shined like new. All I did was run my iron over this sheet a couple of times. No burnt fingers! I was really pleased at how well it worked for me. I would definitely recommend trying it -- you will find it on the notions wall at Quilter's Haven.

Quilter's Haven just got in 2 new notions which will help you to "GET A GRIP" on your quilting projects.

For those "Digitabulists" (seriously, that is what people who collect thimbles are known as) Clover's Get a Grip Thimble is a perfect notion to add to your collection. This thimble combines a soft elastic material with a metal thimble cap. It is light and comfortable to use. Three sizes are available and there is a fitting guide right on the package (in other words, if your finger fits through the hole on the package that is the thimble for you).

The first thimble was made in 1695 in England and was made of a brass combination. The device was intended to keep needles from slipping and was known as a "thumb-bell" - it was worn on the thumb (the shape was like a bell, hence the name thumb-bell). Obviously today thimbles are worn on a finger and they are made from metal, leather, rubber, wood, glass and even china. There are even some rare thimbles which are made from diamonds, sapphires and rubies (although those likely will set you back more than the $8.95 for the Clover Grip and Protect Thimble). Thimble collecting is extremely popular in England and there is an annual "Great Exhibit" which showcases thimble history. Thimbles have been melted down for the metal (during war times), used for advertising, used to commemorate important events (like shop hops) and who can forget the miniature thimble that is one of the tokens in Monopoly.

The second "gripping" notion which has just arrived is "Grip-n-Grip" by Bear Thread Designs. This is a heat resistant non-slip surface which will hold your project steady and keep it in place. What can you use it for you might ask --- how about hooping embroidery projects, marking quilt tops, coloring or using paintsticks on fabric, tracing applique pieces, making quilt labels, signing friendship blocks - just a few ideas. The mat measures 12.5 x 18 inches and you will find it on the notions wall at Quilter's haven.

2009-2010 Saturday/Wednesday Sampler starts this week!

Quilter's Haven will kick off the 2009-2010 Block of the Month Sampler this week. The initial cost is $5.00 which will give you the fabric for your first block. Meetings will be at Quilter's Haven the third Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. and third Saturday at either 10 a.m. or 2 p.m. (except for September 2009 in which the meeting will be on the fourth Wednesday and Saturday due to the Quilter's Haven Retreat at the St. James Hotel) -- a complete listing of the dates and times can be found on the website under "Block of the Month." Bring in your completed block the next month and you will receive the fabric for the next block free! If you didn't get it done, you can pay $5.00 and purchase a block kit. You will get one free pass to use throughout the year. At the end of the year, Jean Graham will put the blocks together for what is sure to be a stunning quilt -- check out the fabrics in the blog entry below -- they are gorgeous! Quilter's Haven Owner Jean Graham has done it again! She has taken the blocks from the 2008-2009 Saturday Sampler Block of the Month program and has set them in a stunning original Jean Graham design. The completed quilt is on display at Quilter's Haven. A limited number of finishing kits (which include the border fabric, the setting and chain fabrics and the binding) are still available - but supplies are limited - and when they are gone, they are gone!
