There are some really great art quilt technique classes coming up at Quilter's Haven. There are the art sampler classes and there is an art and color theory class also coming up soon - check out the website. I was in the shop on Saturday and Jean has some adorable postcard samples that Shelli did -- and she is teaching a class. There is a great painted Sample that Jennifer did and she will be showing us how to use the paints in Jean's shop and make our own painted sample. This is all just FUN!!

I used to paint. I painted with watercolors. Before I had children. For some reason in the past 6 years or so I have not picked up a paint brush whatsoever. Then a week ago or so Jean looked at one of the embroideries we were working on with paper and thread and said "I wonder what this would look like if you added some paint to it" and gave me a --- you could do it....look. You know, that look that Jean has that instills confidence in us and encourages us to explore our own creative talents. So I did just that. I came home and dusted off my paintbrushes, was dismayed to find a few paints had "dried" up, was excited to discover many had not -- hunted until I found my favorite brush (I tend to paint like I golf....one brush, one club....) -- and....

Jean showed me a piece of wonderful paper he shad -- paper that is made for embroidery...I asked for a piece of that paper....when I brought her the piece of paper back....
The design is from OESD's "Needlepainted Florals" - a pack of great floral designs with a long embroidery stitch look.

I love doing machine embroidery. I had almost forgotten how much until all of the conversation at the recent retreat. When I got home I "dusted" off my Bernina 830 and fired it up. Jean has an embroidery design at the shop that is called "Feathered Beauties" that is a collection of bird and flower embroideries. In the spirit of trying new things --- I decided to try and embroider on paper...watercolor paper. I used to do quite a bit of watercolor painting - but have not touched a brush for years - not before my son was born and he is now 5 1/2....so I had some paper sitting around, had the design loaded, found some thread....AND....
BIRDS....the samples are at the shop. This wasn't the end of my exploration...but rather the beginning....more photos to come....

It is dry skin season - no doubt about that. I have tried a lot of hand lotions and usually don't like the slippery feeling, the smell, or the oil residue that seems to get left behind. I have found a new lotion that I am in LOVE with!!! Jean carries it at the shop and it is WONDERFUL. It works great, has a pleasant smell and you can sew sew sew with it and there is no residue on your fabric.
Right now she has the soft cotton, the mango coconut and the vanilla. I just used the soft cotton and love the smell. My daughter, Brynne, and I were at the shop last night and both Brynne and Jean smelled of lovely vanilla all night long!!
I forget the exact cost but its somewhere around $12 and you only need a small drop. You should try this....you too will LOVE it!!
